From Echoes to Clarity - Transforming Sound at St. Andrew’s Church, Chennai

Every Word Matters in a Space Like This

St. Andrew’s Church (The Kirk), Egmore, Chennai, is a historic house of worship where sermons and spoken word lie at the heart of every gathering. However, its distinctive circular architecture and reverberant interiors posed long‑standing challenges to speech clarity - calling for a professionally designed sound solution that could respect both the space and its purpose.

A Beautiful Space with a Difficult Acoustic Truth

For more than a decade, the church relied on a locally assembled sound system that struggled to serve the congregation evenly. While functional, the system failed to deliver consistent intelligibility, leaving sections of the seating area affected by echoes, reflections, and unclear audio.

The architectural character that makes St. Andrew’s Church visually iconic also makes it acoustically complex. Addressing these challenges required more than just louder speakers - it demanded a thoughtful, design‑led approach to sound.

Why This Church Was Especially Challenging

Designing audio for St. Andrew’s Church meant overcoming several layered acoustic constraints:

o  A circular interior layout, creating complex reflection paths

o  No acoustic treatment on walls or ceiling surfaces

o  A highly reverberant environment, amplifying echoes

o  No air‑conditioning, causing temperature variations

o  Ceiling‑mounted and wall‑mounted fans, adding ambient noise

Achieving clarity in such an environment, without altering the building’s historic structure was the core challenge.

Design Before Deployment: A Smarter Way Forward

The project was undertaken by Deco dynamics Solutions LLP, who approached the requirement with a clear philosophy: let design and data lead every decision.

Working closely with Yamaha Music India Pvt. Ltd., the team evaluated multiple system options through detailed simulations, listening tests, and on‑site assessments. The goal was not just uniform loudness, but controlled dispersion, clarity, and balance across the entire congregation area.

After extensive testing, the NEXO ID Series stood out—offering the precision and flexibility needed to tame reverberation while preserving the church’s architectural integrity and staying within budget expectations.

The System Chosen to Do the Job Right

The final installation featured a carefully engineered NEXO ID Series sound reinforcement system, precisely positioned and calibrated to suit the circular geometry of the space.

Installed System Configuration:

  • NEXO ID84 – For focused, high-output coverage ensuring clear speech across the church's highly reverberant circular main congregation area.

  • NEXO ID24 – To deliver even sound distribution and consistent intelligibility across the seating area while minimizing echoes.

  • NEXO IDS210 Subwoofers – To provide controlled low-frequency depth without compromising speech clarity.

  • NXAMP4X1MKII – To provide precise system processing, protection, and reliable overall performance, while powering the NEXO ID84 and NEXO IDS210 subwoofers.

  • NANONXAMP4 – To deliver compact, efficient amplification and simplified system management, specifically powering the NEXO ID24 loudspeakers.

Each component was selected to ensure controlled coverage, clear speech reproduction, and a natural listening experience throughout the church.

From Echoes to Clarity: Sound That Serves the Space

Once installed and tuned, the results were immediate and impactful. The church committee and congregation are highly satisfied with the overall quality of sound.

They noted:

✓ Clear and natural speech intelligibility

✓ Noticeable reduction in perceived reverberation

✓ Even and consistent sound coverage

✓ An overall enhancement of the worship experience

Most importantly, these improvements were achieved without any acoustic treatment or structural modification, preserving the heritage character of the church.

Sound Engineering with Purpose

With NEXO’s professional audio solution in place, St. Andrew’s Church (The Kirk), Egmore, Chennai now benefits from a sound system that truly supports its mission, ensuring every word is heard clearly, comfortably, and consistently.

This project demonstrates how intentional sound design, advanced loudspeaker technology, and expert system integration can overcome even the most demanding acoustic challenges—bringing clarity to spaces where it matters most.
